My Hamsters
Hello, I'm Lucy, aged 13 years old and I live on Dartmoor, in Devon. This is a blog about my hamsters, what they get up to, helpfull tips on hamster care, and (hopefully) following the life of some baby hamsters as the grow up. I have had many hamsters before, and even had a taste of breeding them. I love my hamsters and try my very best to give them the best life possible, and I truely belive they love me in return.

Rescue
I am currently thinking about maybe taking in a few unwanted rodents along the lines, and rehoming them to caring and loving forever homes after recently having my eyes opended to the amount of unwanted or badly cared for hamsters, rats, gerbils, mice ect ect that just end up dieing of neglect, or as snake food. This has made me seriously think about my decisions to breed. Firstly, would I find homes for all the babies? Secondly, I wouldn't like to think that the babies would take away a possible home for a poor little rescue hamster. I have had this thought nagging on my mind for ages now, and I have finnally came to the conclusion that maybe I should to begin to take in some hamsters or other small rodents such as rats, gerbils or mice, that desparatly a home, and rehome them or keep them myself. If anybody knows of any such animals please email me or respond to this post, thanks. Just to let you know, I may still breed Midnight and Honey, but, if I do, that will most likley be the last litter I ever breed.

Honey's Escape
I'm sorry that I have not posted in a while (lost my camera + have been verry busy) but I have made a short little storybord like tale from Honey's mouth about her little 'escape' (although it wasn't really an escape as I was there all the time, but I let her think so :P)
"Ooh look there's Lucy, maybe she's coming to get me out of here!" |
"What's this? An open door? And where did Lucy go?" |
"Hmmm... maybe, just maybe, I could escape from here?" |
"Ahh, here we go, up we get!" |
"Nearly there! Must. Keep. Going. Freedom. Need." |

Going away & Honey not mating
I'm visiting my Dad today (as I do every other weekend) and so I have had to say a sad goodbye to my hamsters, stock them up with food and water, and ask my Mum is she could check up on them to make sure they are okay.
I'm a bit confused with Honey as I have tried her with Midnight every evening between 9pm - 11pm for 4 days and she hasn't taken him. Maybe the winter chill is really setting in here and Honey just isn't in the mood for love. Anyway, fingers crossed that when I get back from Dad's she'll let him mate! (I already have homes lined up for the babies, and any spares I'll keep for myself. I have done my reasearch, infact, I have had baby hamsters before, so at least I do know a little about what I'm doing.)

Meet 'tiny' Tim
Timmy is an adorable old hybrid dwarf hamster who was born on the 12th August 2008, and is still going strong despite his age. He is so tiny and fragile looking you daren't pick him up, but once this miniature bundle of love is in your hands you know that he is just one big softie! He has never hurt anybody, and is so delicate and just simply kissable! He loves pottering around on his flying saucer wheel, and makes no noise at all most nights, so he often sleeps in my room. I have had him since he was born because the pet shop miss-sexed his Mum and he is belived to be the last alive of his family. Timmy has never made any effort to escape, and I trust him a lot. At one point I had him trained to just sit on my shoulder and stay there for the whole day if I wanted him to,
Meet Midnight
Born 17th June 2010 Midnight is a stunning banded black longhaired Syrian and is usually very calm and placid, with a 'don't care' attitude top life. When I first got him I liked to call him 'babyface' because he was the cutest little face in the world. I always say that if there is anybody in the world scared of hamsters, Midnight would be the one for them, as he is just so soft, cuddly and placid. Midnight likes to take life at his own pace, and I think of him as this laid back dude, all calm, but when he sees a lady... well, what can I say, he's the one that does all the chasing! My favourite feature about him is his little black circle in the middle of his white belly, it just looks so cute and perfect. I'm hoping to mate him to Honey in the near future, fingers crossed for lots of healthy babies in the weeks to come.
Meet Honey
Honey is a gorgeous, very big longhaired golden rex female Syrain hamster of a very solid and chunky build. Born in the 26th May 2010 she has the sweetest temprement (as the name suggests) and has never bitten or tried to escape from my hands. She is lively, but will often just freeze and let you pet her as much as you want. Honey has some rather pretty skirts (tufts of hair on their behind) that are very thick and long for a female (Longhaired males genrally have longer hair than longhaired females) She lives in a huge cage, called a 'Zoozone 1'. Zoozones are fantastic plastic tank style cages designed for rabbits and guinea pigs but they also make great homes for hamsters - ensuring you fasten wire mesh to the top grid, as the spacing is so wide even the largest of hamsters can squeeze out. Honey loves her cage, although she does like to chew the bars in the night, which is a real nuisance, as you can imagine! Honey is hoped to have a litter with my LH black banded boy named Midnight sometime in the near future, and, quite frankly, I can't wait!
